Where to Celebrate Halloween: Top Destinations Around the World

If your inner child lights up at the thought of Halloween, why not take a trip abroad during this spooky holiday? There are incredible places around the world that celebrate Halloween with a special unique twist.

You don’t need a costume, but you can dress up if you want, almost everything is allowed during this wild time of the year. Some people jump right into the action, while others prefer to sit back and watch the fun.

Here are some of the best destinations to spend a legendary Halloween abroad!

Salem, Massachusetts, USA

Salem is Halloween central, hands down. It’s spooky season there year-round, and in October, the town is packed with tourists wearing costumes. You’ll see plenty of witches’ outfits!

For a bit of historical background, Salem’s reputation comes from the infamous witch trials of the 1600s. Over 30 people were executed after accusations of witchcraft spread paranoia across the region.

In the heart of the city, dive straight into history with a visit to the Salem Witch Trials Memorial.

You'll come across gravestones with the names of both women and men—yes, six men were also executed after being accused of witchcraft.

Essex Street is the place to go for witchcraft shops and quirky, esoteric boutiques. Get into the vibe by picking up a witch’s hat, some incense, and other magical souvenirs to take back home. If you’re not scared of what the future has in store for you, stop by a fortune teller for a reading or even get your aura scanned.

Mexico City, Mexico

If you're expecting a traditional American Halloween, you won’t find that in Mexico City. Instead, join the locals to celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a vibrant cultural experience that will blow your mind!

The celebration lasts over three days (October 31st to November 2nd) and is packed with vibrant flowers, incense, face painting, skeletons, and altars dedicated to honouring loved ones who passed away.

You’ll be surrounded by sensory overload—music, parades, and endless festivities. And don’t miss out on the special treats like sugar skulls, pan de muerto (a sweet bread), and Mexican atole (a hot corn-based drink).

For a truly authentic experience, visit one of the local cemeteries on November 1st. It’s common for families to gather there overnight to pay their respects to their deceased relatives.

Savannah, Georgia, USA

If you prefer a warmer Halloween, Savannah is your go-to spot. October in this Southern city is mild, which makes it perfect for outdoor ghost tours, cemetery strolls, and visiting haunted houses. Savannah’s rich history of ghost stories and haunted hotels will give you full body chills.

Stop by Colonial Park Cemetery, a good fit with Halloween vibes. For the ultimate trick-or-treating experience that will make you wonder if ghosts are real, take a walk down Jones Street, known as the prettiest street in Savannah. They take Halloween decorations to the next level so it’s no surprise it’s a favourite among families and kids in costume.

Just keep in mind, Savannah is known for its lively (sometimes tipsy) locals, so expect a party atmosphere. And if you're into cult classics, don’t miss the annual Rocky Horror Show!

Edinburgh, Scotland

If there’s one place that knows how to do Halloween, it’s no doubt Edinburgh. With all its ghost stories and creepy legends, it’s the perfect city in Europe to really get into the spooky vibes.

Edinburgh is linked to the mythical characters of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, who were actually inspired by a real guy from the city, Deacon Brodie. You can even grab a drink at Deacon Brodie’s Pub and soak up some history while you enjoy your pint.

And you can’t miss Edinburgh Castle towering over the city. Question is, will you be brave enough to sign up for one of the nighttime ghost tours through the castle guaranteed to give you a truly hair-raising experience.

Transylvania, Romania

Still in Europe, Transylvania, the land of vampires and home to the legendary Dracula is the place to celebrate Halloween. This region, inspired by Vlad the Impaler, is full of gothic castles and eerie tales.

Explore Bran Castle, often linked to the Dracula legend, and Peles Castle, another breathtaking fortress that will transport you to another time.

Romania is a true hidden gem that deserves a spot on your bucket list. It’s affordable, rich in history, and absolutely stunning. If you go, make sure to take a drive along the winding Transfagarasan Highway, it’s straight out of a fairytale!
