7 Must-Do Experiences in Las Terrenas (Samaná), Dominican Republic

Looking for a Caribbean getaway that's a world away from all-inclusive resorts? Head to the little paradise bustling with French-speaking expats: Las Terrenas.

This chic and trendy destination attracts many travellers who end up staying for extended periods. Las Terrenas boasts absolutely stunning beaches and a wide selection of great restaurants. Plus, you'll find plenty of villas, apartments, and rooms to rent on your own. Nicknamed "the French village," you'll never run out of friends to grab an apéritif on the beach.

Having spent two winters in the Dominican Republic, I can assure you that Las Terrenas is a real gem. It's the perfect place to experience an unforgettable Caribbean adventure, combining comfort, authenticity, and a laid-back atmosphere. You'll simply fall in love with this tropical paradise!

How to Get to Las Terrenas?

Many vacationers confuse Las Terrenas with Samaná. Samaná is the name of the province, and it is the main airport where tourists arrive to stay in Las Terrenas. El Catey International Airport (IATA code: AZS) is located about 30 kilometres from Las Terrenas, a 30 to 45-minute taxi ride.

As for the city of Samaná, located on the bay of the same name, it serves mainly as a starting point for excursions, particularly to the Los Haitises National Park or for whale watching. The city itself is not very touristy and doesn't generally attract visitors for overnight stays. So remember, you'll be staying in Las Terrenas!

7 Must-Do Activities Starting From Las Terrenas

Whether you're staying in a hotel, apartment, or even the only all-inclusive in Las Terrenas, Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo, here are my seven favourite activities, tried and tested by me, to add to your sunny vacation:

1. Playa Bonita

This beach, located outside the centre of Las Terrenas, is worth the trip! It's an exceptional beach for long walks under coconut trees, admiring surfers, and, for the more active, trying your hand at surfing!

The best way to enjoy Playa Bonita, without staying in a hotel with private access, is to head to the Mosquito Boutique Hotel Playa Bonita. Although it's a hotel, the restaurant and beach bar section is open to everyone. Just order a drink, and you can settle in for the morning or afternoon.

The place is very safe and great for sunbathing, sipping fresh juice cocktails, and relaxing in bean bags. The atmosphere is super laid-back.

2. Playa Las Ballenas

There are tons of beaches in Las Terrenas, and you're probably wondering which one is the best place for swimming. That's Playa Las Ballenas! In the luxury villa district, this golden sand beach is for everyone. The waves are small, and the water is crystal clear—just what you need for a relaxing swim.

You have the option of bringing your own chairs or renting loungers on site for maximum comfort. If you have young children, this is the optimal choice! They'll have plenty of sand to build their dream castles, and you will be able to enjoy the sun while keeping an eye on them.

3. Porto by Mosquito

For brunch or sunset, Porto by Mosquito is a refined spot with boho-chic wooden structures. You'll be blown away by this magazine-worthy decor.

Brunch is a must; you can go with your better half or take advantage of the large tables to invite all your new friends. It's also an exceptional place to admire a shimmering sunset, accompanied by exquisite cocktails.

4. ETNO

The most popular place in Las Terrenas that you must visit at least once during your stay is undoubtedly ETNO! Everyone knows this iconic establishment, where the atmosphere is always lively.

With its friendly beach bar, you can sip refreshing cocktails with your toes in the sand while enjoying the magnificent sea view. The club also attracts DJs in the evening, the best time to let loose in a festive atmosphere that can last until the wee hours of the morning.

5. Zu Ceviche Bar

This small, intimate restaurant, a well-kept local secret, offers the chance to dine with your feet in the sand. Located directly in the fishermen's district, at Zu Ceviche Bar, you can savour lobster, dorado, ceviche dishes, and other incredibly fresh seafood. Every bite is a true treat for the taste buds!

Don't miss out on the coconut mojito, a delicious cocktail with tropical flavours. Note that you shouldn't be in a hurry, as the service is at the Caribbean pace; the wait is worth it, everything is prepared with care and love.

6. El Limón Waterfall

If you're looking for an adventure, add the most beautiful waterfall in the Dominican Republic to your itinerary: El Limón Falls! To get there by public transport, take a Guagua (a local pickup or minibus) from the centre of Las Terrenas. The fare is paid directly to the driver in Dominican pesos. Ask to be dropped off near the El Limón Falls café.

Upon arrival, local guides will offer to accompany you by hiring them, but it's not mandatory. You can also venture out on your own using the Maps.Me app. You must pay the entrance fee to the park for a few pesos before crossing the river.

Wear comfortable shoes, bring water and sunscreen, as the hike can be rather demanding, especially if it has rained recently. The trail can become muddy, so be prepared for a slippery walk. The journey to the waterfall usually takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace and physical condition, to cover the 3.2 kilometres.

Once you reach the waterfall, you'll be rewarded with a spectacular view: a 50-metre-high waterfall that forms a natural pool below where you can swim.

7. Day trip to Cayo Levantado and Los Haitises National Park

In town or at your hotel, you can easily book a day trip to Los Haitises National Park on Samaná Bay. If you're visiting during the whale season, which is from mid-January to the end of March, you might even spot some. In any case, you'll love this excursion!

You'll hop on a minibus to Samaná, where you'll catch a boat to Cayo Levantado, a small, postcard-perfect island with white sand and coconut trees—your very own slice of Caribbean paradise. You'll have lunch there, drink coconut water, and can swim, sunbathe, and relax.

Then, head to Los Haitises National Park, which has cliffs that will remind you of the landscape of southern Thailand. You'll approach the mangroves and stop at the edge to visit impressive caves and observe the birds.

Paradise awaits you in Las Terrenas!

For an authentic yet comfortable experience, choose Las Terrenas for your next vacation! It's the kind of place you keep coming back to!
